Author: Dr. Nicholas Shubin
If you are missing a tooth or group of teeth, you might find that you are terrified to smile; you do not like to speak since you think you will sound hilarious, or you might not be capable to eat some foods that you enjoy. Until lately, your only alternative was to substitute these missing teeth with the dentures. Patients normally complained that dentures were not comfortable and not convenient.

Dental implants eliminate the awkwardness, annoyance and embarrassment often linked with dentures as well as older techniques of tooth substitution. Dental implants are permanent. Unlike dentures in addition to other detachable alternatives, dental implants could be maintained accurately the same like your natural teeth. Blushing, flossing and normal checkups with your dentist are all that is required to care for dental implants.

Dental implants are fake tooth roots which are anchored in or on top of the jawbone. Dental implants are a secure, effectual way to substitute the single missing tooth, 2 or more teeth, and also entire rows of teeth. Though every case is dissimilar, total time for the implant dentistry process could be up to 18 months. This comprises the original evaluation during your ultimate “teeth” being implanted.

Dental implants are best substitute for normal teeth. Implant dentistry could develop your appearance and self-assurance at any age. Dental implants are obtainable to anybody missing all or a few of their teeth, comprising kids, adults, and the aged.

If you are at present suffering from oral irregularity or harm that needs tooth extraction then you might be trying to make a decision if to get dentures or implant. You might be wondering if benefits of dental implant would out weight the price. You must note that the direct cost could be deceiving, since dentures could in fact cost you more cash in long run.

Denture requires being taken out of mouth each time you require to brush the teeth. This is the single way for cleaning them carefully. Moreover, dentures normally rub beside your older set of teeth you have. At times the false teeth would sink in deeper to adhesive false gum therefore making fit loosely.

When the fitting turns out to be loose, you would feel awkwardly and it could actually damage your gums. Consequently, you would end up visiting a dentist over and over. A denture fitting alteration might be expensive and consume lots of time. However, you would have to go in for usual adjustments in order that you feel relaxing.

You actually do not need to fret regarding the cost difference of implants and dentures. There are inexpensive dental implants which are obtainable. All you require to do is looking for dental school and discover a periodontists who might perform the process on your tooth.

In case you have lots of periodontist candidates then you could evaluate the costs that they proffer and select the best cost that would suit you. You could even ask colleagues, friends and relatives for suggestions. If you take the suggestions of your family and friends, then you would be happy with new inexpensive dental implants.

All of us want those beautiful and healthy smiles. Who wouldn’t want a perfect set of pearly white teeth, set perfectly in their mouth? If you have chipped tooth or have suffered from tooth extraction in the past, dental implants are the best solution for you to get back your set of perfect white and full teeth.

Your face makes the first impression about you. Whether a person would like you or not depends on how presentable you are. Smiles often help to make wonders happen. But would you feel confident enough to smile, if you are missing even a tooth? Will you have confident to make yourself presentable as you would have with a perfect set of teeth? Can you smile so carelessly with a missing or a chipped tooth? Certainly not! These are a few things that make us conscious about ourselves. But when the technology has advanced so much and effective solutions like dental implants are now available, why should we hold back on investing for those beautiful smiles that everybody envies. What if you are a model, actor, a celebrity or anybody, who earns a living with their face value? You can simply not afford to lose a tooth and then go on with your normal routine as it is. You will certainly face issues with lower confidence level and less sureness about yourself and the performance you are expected to give out. A missing tooth or dentures can have a drastic impact on your professional life. Therefore, it is important that you invest well in them.

Forget about-face value because you are confident that your skills will take you to your desired position. But, have you wondered why your teeth ache or your jaw gets sore while you eat? Missing tooth or dentures are responsible for this too. Not only do they reduce the effects, your smiles are bound to create, they are also painful while chewing food. Missing tooth may create a problem for you to chew food properly or cause other problems like bad breath and bone loss in the jaw, where the tooth is missing. This causes the cheeks to jut in the face and wrinkles might appear early on your face, even if you have not yet crossed thirty. So, there goes another important factor, which makes it necessary for you to get dental implants. They are obviously for your own benefit, comfort and ease. When you have resources, it is foolish if you do not invest them for your own health and comfort.

Dental implants are for your own convenience. You get a proper and complete solution for your missing tooth and dentures. It is not the elderly who can benefit from this type of dental surgery, but those who suffer from missing tooth problems as well, no matter what age group they belong to. Today, medical science has developed so much, that dental implants can be done without any pain. Also, it is possible to find the right kind of fixtures for your teeth. Earlier when dental surgeries and implants have not developed much, problems use to arise to find a perfect match of the tooth. Now, there is nothing of such sort to worry about.

Dental implants are long-lasting and once you get them done, you can forget about them for a long time. Moreover, with the latest technology being used in such implants, you are less likely to feel awkward with the new tooth and can expect your mouth to adjust to it very quickly.

Drinks
It is advisable for one to use cold drinks and refrain from consuming hard foods until the anesthetic wears off. Hot drinks and hard food will be rough on the area and might lead to bleeding. Any person with dreams to have quick dentist implants really should also avoid swilling their cold drinks around the area, they really should not disturb it with the tongue or fingers, neither should they indulge in strenuous activities within 48 hours of the procedure.

Making use of dentures
It is not advisable to use one at this moment but if you must, it really should cover the surgery area, and it really should fit properly to protect your underlying graft or implant. A dental implant recovery will be quick and total if your dentures fit well, and if it does not, one really should have it adjusted since it can cause damage to the healing implant.

Do not smoke
Smoking will in no way do anyone any good especially in their dental implants recovery. If you are a smoker, refrain from it because it severely limits healing of the implant wounds. This will not be hygienic too in any way whatsoever, and it might even cause bleeding.

Inflammation is normal
There is no need to worry about inflammation in the early phases of your dental implant recovery process. This might happen immediately after one lies flat for the whole night, or simply due to a laceration on the skin, which really should heal immediately after several days. It can be reduced by use of ice packs, wrapped in a cloth, which really should be held over the area for a maximum of 10 mins and at an interval of 20 mins. Sleeping on pillows will be useful as well.

Cleaning
Use the specified mouthwash twice daily to clean your mouth. making use of strong toothpaste inhibits dental implants recovery and really should be avoided at all cost. You really should not brush the area on implant since it might cause sporting off, which could see them come off.

When bleeding persists
In the occasion of persistent bleeding, making use of a moist black tea bag which will help a great deal in your dental implant recovery. This is better than gauze because the tannin in black tea is known to control bleeding. Keeping your head at a higher elevation than the heart will work well at stopping or minimizing bleeding. It can also be controlled by minimum exertion.

Stitches
Any stitches used will begin dissolving immediately after 2-3 weeks, depending on an individual’s dental implants recovery process. It might be uncomfortable to some, and if the healing process is good, one can have them eliminated immediately after a week. In case of a bone graft, tiny granules might appear in the mouth, which really should not cause alarm.

Antibiotics
It is wise to take them as specified to guarantee quick and total dental implants recovery, and one really should be careful to total the course as specified.

Teeth implants are by a large margin the best of the dental options available for old and young who’ve missing teeth. This because they are thought to last for a lifetime.

Sometimes, these replacements are made from little titanium screws that are surgically inserted in the jawbone. What is dazzling about them is that their sizes are similar to that of natural teeth roots. Moreover, they can hold prosthetic teeth ready.

There are lots of reasons that explain why this sort of replace is more legendary than dentures and fixed bridges. For one, surveys among patients testify that they have better chewing potency. As chewing is repeated, wearers of teeth implants need not worry that these replacements might fall off or have difficulty in cutting their food to a digestible size. Furthermore, they keep the jawbone excited when food is chewed. This is critical in protecting somebody’s facial structure.

Besides help in eating, they aid in realizing comfy and proper speech. Missing teeth could cause a kind of dissatisfaction in your talking. Sometimes it is affecting the way that you pronounce words. With implant you will be in a position to talk obviously and swiftly.

Re their fitting into the jawbone, diagonally opposite strong teeth are far from being damaged. Putting them in place doesn’t permit slight scrapes on neighboring enamels at all . Once implanted, they needn’t get replaced now and then. This is a common occuring to dentures as the form of our jaws changes every now and then. Your dentist in South Yarra will help you with this.

Caring for them is as easy as pie because they can be brushed and flossed together with your natural teeth. Unlike dentures, they do not have to be removed for correct cleaning. They do not require special floss threaders for cleaning – something needed for fixed bridges.

Researches show more than 90 % of recorded treatments are successful in providing patients with functional and sturdy replacements for their missing teeth. Nonetheless it can not be correctly done in one trip to your dentist’s hospital. This is why cost of dental implant may be hard to shoulder for certain patients.

If you are one of those folks, you have to understand what it is you would be coughing up for is a good health investment like for a dentist in Melbourne. Just think of the self-confidence you will have from carrying a faultless grin and the oral comfort you will experience thru a restored bite and chewing functionality.

Accordingly, there are dental care insurance schemes which can assist you with this endeavor. If you don’t have dental insurance, consider having one as it is crucial getting full dental care thru all the dental care procedures you may need. It can help you in picking your preferred professional and the payment scheme that may work for your budget.

Going back, if you happen to be looking for aesthetic, comfortable, functional and permanent replacement solutions then go for teeth implants. They are as good as your natural teeth in appearance and in use. With such benefits, paying up for them is a sound investment for folk suffering the pain of missing teeth.

Dental implants are the much-sought-after treatment for missing teeth due to their durability and permanence. The implants are small titanium poles that are inserted into the jaw where teeth have to be replaced. Artificial teeth are anchored once the implants fuse with the jaw bone. Dental implants are a permanent solution to your missing tooth or teeth.

Seven Reasons You Must See a Cosmetic Dentist

Here are a few situations that highlight the need to consult a dentist for dental procedures:

1. Missing tooth: You have a missing tooth and you do not know what to do about it. A dentist can suggest you ways to fill the gap.

2. Artificial looking teeth/dentures: You want to have natural looking teeth rather than uncomfortable and awkward dentures. Dental implants are your answer in this case.

3. Unsure about dental implants: Your dentist can advise you regarding your eligibility. People with uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, heart ailments, thyroid malfunction and smoking habit are usually not allowed to go in for dental implants. Patients with high degree of jaw bone wear and tear are advised to get bone grafting done prior to dental implant treatment.

4. Preserve facial contours: Dentures cause your face contours to change leading to aged appearance. Dentists can suggest many alternatives besides dental implants to preserve contours.

5. Improve mouth hygiene and bite: With an improper dentition, bite as well as hygiene can be severely affected. Dentists can fix this problem with bridges, crowns, fillings, etc. and get you a better bite and improve hygiene.

6. Get a great smile: Let’s face it. Not everyone is born with a beautiful smile. However, with modern innovations, everyone can get close to having one. Visit a dentist for improving your smile and see the world of veneers, bridges, gum grafting, gum bleaching, Invisalign and more.

7. Inquire about insurance: Insurance can take care of most of the bill; however, not all cosmetic treatments are covered. You may want to acknowledge the eligibility of certain procedures and ensure that you save on your out-of-pocket amount.

Over 1,200 years ago, the Mayans created and implemented the first known implant to be bedded directly in bone. These early implants were made out of seashells. Today, a dental implant is inserted into your mouth by fitting a tiny titanium post into the jaw and allowing the bone to fuse with the implant. Over thousands years of its existence in medicine and dentistry, dental implants have certainly changed dramatically.

Implants are designed to look and work just like your other teeth but don’t chew as well as your natural choppers because they lack a key ligament. However, since they look and act just like real teeth, your smile will be unaffected by the dental addition.

An implant in dentistry is most often used to support jaw and tooth structure when there has been damage. For instance, a dental implant can keep the teeth on either side of a gap from a missing tooth from caving in on either side. This is particularly important when more than one tooth is missing in any given gap. Sometimes, too, dental implants are used specifically to make way for further dental work that is required. Most of the time, getting dentures requires some sort of dental implant.

What we know of the Mayan civilization using dental implants all comes from the remains of a young woman who was found in 1931 and dates all the way back to 600 AD. Among the bones found was a piece of jaw that had three specifically shaped shells directly embedded in the bone.

It took several decades for archaeologists to realize that the shells were not placed in the jaw after death but beforehand when the woman was alive. This means that the Mayans were able to craft their own implants and surgically embed them in bone. A truly amazing feat though the success of the treatment is, and probably always will be, unknown.

Over a thousand years later, in 1952, an orthopedic surgeon from Sweden named Brånemark made the next big advance in dental implants when he began experimenting with fusing titanium to bone. The discovery of titanium’s ability to fuse with bone happened by accident but further studies concluded Brånemark’s original assumptions.

He proposed his discovery be used in hip surgery but the medical community preferred it in dental surgery. Though other people used his technique, Brånemark himself didn’t place a titanium dental implant until the mid 1960s, more than a decade after he first made the discovery.

Though Brånemark started his discoveries in the 1950s, it wasn’t until the early 1980s that his ideas were used commercially. The company he sold his patents to has now placed millions of implants in patients around the world. His discoveries still have modern influence and it extends beyond dentistry and the dental implant to other fields of medicine as well.

Elaine is a dental assistant for a sedation dentist with over 15 years of of experience in the field.

Sports drinks hit the wire today with a red light that their level of acidity is increasingly responsible for irreversible damage to teeth, especially amongst adolescents and younger adults, their predominant target market.

The report is published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry. Lead author of the study, Poonam Jain, BDS, MS, MPH confirms the findings:

“Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’ for them than soda … Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.”

The acidity levels are responsible for eroding tooth enamel, the hard, shiny, white outer surface of the teeth. Once this is compromised, the inner softer dentine can start to decay quite easily, with the tooth cavity making a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Researchers looked at acidity levels in 13 different sports drinks and found levels varied greatly between both brands and different flavors of the same brand. Scientists immersed samples of tooth enamel in each beverage for 15 minutes and then replaced them in artificial saliva for two hours. The cycle was repeated four times per day for five days to mimic the equivalent of drinking four smart drinks per day. At all other times, the teeth were stored in the artificial saliva.

After just five days, the damage was already evident, with energy drinks causing double the damage of more balanced sports drinks. Some fifty percent of US teenagers are reported to consume energy drinks and as many as sixty two percent consume at least one sports drink per day. Parents and young adults should be made aware of the downside to the heavily marketed products, says the report.

Pooman continues that :

“Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’ for them than soda … Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.”

While AGD spokesperson Jennifer Bone, DDS, MAGD cites her experience with patients :

“Teens regularly come into my office with these types of symptoms, but they don’t know why … We review their diet and snacking habits and then we discuss their consumption of these beverages. They don’t realize that something as seemingly harmless as a sports or energy drink can do a lot of damage to their teeth.”

Dr. Bone advises her patients to minimize their intake of sports and energy drinks and also consider chewing sugar free gum to promote saliva production, as well as washing the mouth with water, to assist the body in returning the mouth to its natural pH. a little quicker. Another good point she makes is to wait at least an hour before brushing teeth to avoid rubbing the acids directly onto the tooth surface.

Although marketers might not want to admit it, natural fruit juices and especially coconut water which has excellent re-hydrating properties, might make a better alternative to smart drinks, which are often loaded with sugar, caffeine and artificial ingredients, and can be costly, not only in purchase price, but also in dentistry bills.

Over the years, there have been great improvements in the field of dentistry. However, there are still millions of people who suffer from tooth loss more often than not. Loss of teeth can be cause by several things such as an injury where your teeth get knocked out, gum disease or gingivitis and tooth decay. For a long time, the only option that people had for replacing their teeth was dentures or bridges. With the invention of dental implants, cosmetic surgery has become a popular way for people to deal with losing their teeth.

Dental implants are designed to look like your natural teeth and are built with a strong foundation. These devices are made from titanium. There are many benefits to having these devices in your teeth. These benefits include improving your appearance by using these titanium devices that look as well as providing you with a set of natural looking teeth. These teeth inserts fuse together with the bone so they can become permanent. It can also help make your speech better. If you require dentures and they are made incorrectly, it can cause you to mumble your words. But with these inserts, you can speak clearly.

If you have had dentures, which are not permanent, then you know how uncomfortable they can be. Dental implants are much more comfortable to wear. Chewing with dentures can be very uncomfortable and hard to do. Dental implants are used just like your normal teeth so you can eat all of the foods you love to eat without any problems or discomforts.

Many people wonder if these titanium devices are really successful. The success rate may be slightly different depending on the location within the jaw that devices are placed. But in general, these devices have a 98% success rate. With the proper maintenance, these devices can last an entire lifetime.

It is important to understand that not everyone is a candidate for these titanium devices. In order to have this type of surgery done, you need to be in good health, have healthy gums and you should have a sufficient amount of bone so the device can hold. People who smoke heavily, have conditions such as heart disease or diabetes and people who have been through radiation therapy are not good candidates for these types of oral inserts.

If you are considering these types of oral devices, you should understand that this procedure is not covered under any type of dental insurance. However, if you have medical insurance, it may be possible that it is covered under your medical plan. This will depend on the type of plan you have as well as what caused your tooth loss. You should call your insurance provider and ask if your particular situation is covered under your current plan.

Many people are under the assumption that getting dental implants is painful. Many people who have gone through the procedure state that they experienced little to no discomfort. During the procedure, local anesthesia is used.

To place the implants, the surgeon first will make an incision (cut) in your gums to expose the bone. He or she then will drill a hole in the bone and place the implant in the hole. The surgeon probably will take an X-ray of the area to make sure the implant is where it should be. The surgeon will then stitch your gum closed over the implant.

The time required for this procedure depends on:

-The number of implants
-Whether or not you get a bone graft at the same time

In most cases, placing a single dental implant requires about one hour. You will feel some pain after this procedure. The level of discomfort depends on the person, but generally it has been described as relatively mild.

If the implant is placed in the front of your mouth, your dentist will give you a temporary denture or bridge so that you do not have to be without teeth. He or she will discuss options with you before the surgery.

After the surgery, your surgeon will give you antibiotics and pain medicine. You also will get instructions to follow. These will include:

Don’t spit, suck on straws or smoke. This can dislodge blood clots and slow healing.
Eat only soft food to avoid injuring your gums.
Don’t try to clean the implant area for the next one to two weeks, but clean the rest of your mouth normally. Your dentist may give you an antibacterial rinse to help keep the area clean.

You will return to the surgeon 7 to 10 days later to have your stitches removed.

After the implant is placed in your jaw, you will have to wait several months for the bone to bond with the implant. This usually takes 3 or 4 months in the lower jaw and 5 or 6 months in the upper jaw. During this time, the head of the implant usually remains hidden under your gum.

Second surgery
After the implants have integrated with (attached to) the surrounding bone, you are ready for the second surgery. After giving you local anesthesia, your surgeon will make a small cut in the gum. This exposes the implant. This surgeon will remove a protective screw from the implant and replace it with a metal healing cap (collar). The healing cap looks like a small metal cylinder that sits above your gums in the area where your tooth would be. It maintains the space so that the gum heals correctly around the implant.

In a very small percentage of cases, the implants will not successfully integrate with the bone. If this happens, your dentist can do one of the following:

Remove the implants and immediately replace them with slightly wider ones.
Remove them and allow the area to heal for several months before making a second attempt.

Some dentists are now using one-stage implants. These implants are placed in the jaw and remain exposed in the mouth so that no second surgery is needed.

Restoration
Generally, you will go to your dentist or prosthodontist two or three weeks after the second surgery to start the process of having your crown, bridge or denture made.

Complications From Surgery

Any surgery carries the possibility of complications. Problems that can occur with implant surgery include:

Bleeding
Infection
Injury to nerves, sinuses (located above your upper teeth) or the nasal cavity

When implants are used to replace lower teeth, your dentist could nick the nerve that runs through the jawbone during drilling. This can cause pain or numbness. If numbness occurs, it usually affects the lower part of the lip and chin or one side of the tongue. It can last for several months until the nerve heals. In some cases, it may be permanent.

In the upper jaw, there is the possibility of drilling through the jawbone into one of your sinuses or nasal cavity. This could result in an infection. To avoid this, special X-rays are taken before your surgery to help the surgeon determine where the nerves, sinuses and nasal cavity are located.

Implant Failure

Implant surgery is successful more than 90% of the time.

Occasionally, an implant fails to integrate with the surrounding bone. This is usually discovered at the second stage surgery when the implant is uncovered and the surgeon finds it is loose. In this case, the “failed” implant has to be removed. Another implant can be placed either immediately or at a later visit.

Sometimes implants fail to integrate with surrounding bone after the first stage of surgery. Potential reasons include:

Surgical trauma
Infection around the implant
Smoking — This appears to decrease blood flow to the healing gums and bone, which could interfere with the bonding process.
Lack of healthy bone — If there is not enough bone for the implant to remain stable, the implant may move around within the bone and integration will not occur.
Titanium allergies — These are extremely rare.
Excessive or uneven force on the implants because of the way the teeth come together during chewing and speaking (the bite).

Problems also can develop years after implants are placed. For example, just like natural teeth and gum tissue, the gum around implants can become infected by bacteria. This leads to a form of periodontal disease called periimplantitis. If left untreated, this condition can cause bone loss. Then the implant can become loose and have to be removed. Generally, this situation can be treated in a way very similar to treatments for periodontal disease affecting natural teeth.

Another type of complication that can happen over time is breakage. Either the implant or the implant-supported restoration (crown, bridge or denture) can break. This usually happens if your bite (the way your teeth come together) is not aligned properly. If your bite is off, too much force might be placed on the restoration or implant. Broken restorations often can be repaired. However, a fractured implant has to be removed.

A implant that breaks or fails because of an infection can be replaced with a new implant.
